Hoʻōla Maui hires local workforce to support the Maui clean-up effort

Hoʻōla Maui held its first round of job interviews in Kahului this week at the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement’s (CNHA’s) Kākoʻo Maui office at the Maui Mall. The Native Hawaiian Organizations that make up Ho’ōla Maui are hiring as many qualified Maui residents as possible to aid in the successful clean-up of Maui’s burn zones. The new hires will contribute to Hoʻōla Maui’s efforts to support the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract for the current phase of clean-up work for Maui.

Two recent Hoʻōla Maui hires greeting applicants outside the hiring event held at Kakoʻo Maui.

Tevita Hala, the first interview of the day, applied for one of DAWSON’s labor positions. Tevita’s family is from Lahaina; his family’s house was one of the thousands of structures that were lost in the fire. Tevita heard Hoʻōla Maui ads running on TV, and thought, “Why not apply? After all,” he said, “to be able to pitch in on the clean-up work for his hometown would feel more meaningful than what I had been doing before.”

Tevita filled out an application at www.hawaiiancouncil.org/mauijobs, and came in for an in-person interview, bright and early at CNHA’s Kākoʻo Maui office. He was the first hire made that day.

Hoʻōla Maui is hiring for the following positions:

  • Data Management Specialist (Engineering Technician II)

  • Field Technician (Engineering Technician I)

  • Site Laborer (Laborer)

  • Project Administrator (Administrative Assistant)

  • Project Engineer I

  • Site Debris Monitor Technician (Environmental Technician)

  • Site Evaluation Technician (Environmental Technician)

  • Site Quality Control Specialist

  • Site Safety & Health Technician (Quality Control Inspector)

As a coalition, Hoʻōla Maui is committed to ensuring the clean-up of the burn zones on Maui is efficient, thorough, and in the best interest of the affected community and its Hawaiian cultural resources.
