Hoʻōla Maui assesses trees in the burn zone for resilience, safety, cultural significance
Months after the August wildfires, the organic environment on Maui is coming back. Some trees are starting to show signs of renewal, illustrating the resilience of nature even in the face of devastation. To support a U.S. Army Corps of Engineering (USACE) contract for site assessment and to accelerate renewal, Hoʻōla Maui arborists are assessing each tree to determine its health - whether it is likely to survive and eventually thrive once again, or if it is damaged to the point of needing to be removed for the safety of the community and ʻāina.

Halloween in Lahaina
The Hoʻōla Maui team joined together with partners from the Lahaina community to support Halloween at Whalers Village, the shopping center next door to Hoʻōla Maui’s base of operations. Being a part of the Hoʻōla Maui effort is about kuleana to this community, in ways big and small.
Hoʻōla Maui begins clean-up work in Lahaina
Hoʻōla Maui crews marked the opening of work in Lahaina on Friday, Oct. 27, as the team nears the end of work in Kula for this phase of the clean-up effort. The Lahaina work includes hazard site assessments and hazard tree assessments and asbestos surveys.
Hoʻōla Maui hires local workforce to support the Maui clean-up effort
Hoʻōla Maui held job interviews for Maui residents in Kahului this week for positions that will start work right away. The organizations are hiring as many qualified Maui resident workers as possible to aid in the successful clean-up of Maui’s burn zones.
Hoʻōla Maui clean-up work begins in Kula
The first day of fieldwork for the Hoʻōla Maui team began with an early morning blessing and cultural protocol in the crisp Kula air of Upcountry Maui. Crews conducted their first daily safety briefing, then drove to the first of the burned homes to begin work.
